TDK Launches Cost-Efficient 6-Axis IMU for High-Temperature In-Cabin Automotive Applications

At Sensors Converge 2025, TDK announced the release of the InvenSense IAM-20680HV, a 6-axis MEMS inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed for non-safety, in-cabin automotive applications. Combining cost-efficiency with robust thermal performance, this new IMU is engineered to meet the evolving demands of modern vehicles without compromising reliability.

Designed for Thermal Challenges in In-Cabin Systems
While in-cabin systems are not exposed to engine heat, densely packed electronics such as infotainment control units and camera modules generate considerable heat. The IAM-20680HV addresses this with an operating range up to 125 °C, with guaranteed specs to 105 °C.

“We applied a reliability test covering up to 125 °C to guarantee the component remains undamaged,” said Alberto Marinoni, Senior Director of Product Marketing Automotive at TDK InvenSense.

This ensures performance stability in thermally demanding environments, where lesser components may drift or degrade.

The IMU leverages the same silicon die used across TDK’s IAM-2068x family, benefiting from mature process development and stable temperature compensation. However, to reduce cost, it omits part-specific temperature calibration found in higher-end variants.

Lower Cost Through Smarter Test Strategy
TDK has strategically reduced cost through manufacturing optimization, not architectural changes. The IAM-20680HV retains the MEMS and ASIC architecture of more expensive models but cuts test costs by:

Shortening test routines

Relaxing certain specifications

Broadening acceptance thresholds

This approach increases production yield without compromising on key inertial navigation parameters like bias instability and noise density.

“By enlarging the spec window, we accept more components, reducing yield loss,” Marinoni added.

Additionally, the HV version maintains register and footprint compatibility with its higher-spec siblings, simplifying qualification for different vehicle models or price points.

Low Noise for Precise Motion Sensing
Despite being cost-optimized, the IAM-20680HV delivers class-leading noise performance, critical for accurate short-term position estimation during GNSS outages. The device’s monolithic MEMS integration and proven mechanical design contribute to reduced angular random walk and improved gyroscope and accelerometer performance.

Its ±125 dps full-scale range enhances resolution for fine angular measurement, supporting applications like:

Dead reckoning

Telematics

Electronic horizon estimation

These improvements enable more stable vehicle orientation and path tracking in real time.

Built-in Self-Test and Firmware Compatibility
The IMU features embedded self-test functions, allowing electrostatic checks on MEMS structures to verify mechanical integrity—useful for quality control and diagnostics.

“We can move the MEMS mass inside the component to verify it’s functioning properly,” Marinoni explained.

Moreover, register compatibility across the IAM-2068x family makes firmware reuse straightforward, letting developers integrate the IAM-20680HV into existing platforms without code-level changes. This compatibility also allows Tier 1 suppliers to scale sensor performance across vehicle trims using the same PCB.

Enabling New Automotive Applications
As vehicle electrification advances, new applications like battery monitoring are emerging. Marinoni pointed out that accelerometers are increasingly being used to track thermal shock, vibrations, and mechanical stress in battery systems—extending the relevance of in-cabin sensors beyond comfort and navigation.

The IAM-20680HV is positioned as a middle-ground solution, balancing affordability with performance to support a broader range of sensor-driven automotive functions.
